"The Student Peace Alliance advocates the Legislation for a Culture of Peace through education and grassroots action"
Objective
-Lobby for the Legislation for a Department of Peace
-Create cultures of peace on campuses and in communities
The youth in our country and abroad are drastically affected by violence. The impact of violence is far from discrete, it seeps into our homes and communities through the media. People are building peace in our communities, our schools and across the globe. A Department of Peace will support those already building peace as well as augment our current problem solving modalities.
The Student Peace Alliance formed in March of 2006 as a group of local student initiatives spreading across the country in support of the legislation for a Department of Peace. Students and youth have been organizing, education, and lobbying in support of a Department of Peace in Vermont, New Jersey, Minnesota, California, and in Massachusetts -where the first SPA chapter was formed at Brandeis University.
The Student Peace Alliance is currently active on 15 campuses. The Student Peace Alliance has organized Peace Walks around the country, screenings of the Gandhi film to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his commitment to nonviolence, letter writing campaigns, a National Call In day, and meetings with members of Congress in an effort to advocate for a Department of Peace.
